A case has been filed against former education minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury and former Chattogram city mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, along with 127 others, in connection with an attack on a quota reform student protest. The case also included allegations of assault, explosions, and attempted murder, with an additional 100 to 150 unidentified individuals listed as accused.

The case was filed with the Bakalia police station on Friday night following a court order from metropolitan magistrate Kazi Shariful Islam.


Mohammad Ikhtiar Uddin, officer-in-charge of the Bakalia police station, confirmed the matter.

The plaintiff, Md Elias, a pickup truck driver, hailed from Madhyam Chaktai, had initially filed an application with the Sixth Metropolitan Magistrate Court on January 28.

After a hearing on February 6, fourth metropolitan magistrate Mohammad Mostafa directed the police to register the case.

The primary accused in the case is Rizan Chowdhury, president of the South Bakalia Ward Chhatra League. The other accused include former ward councillors Nurul Alam Mia (South Bakalia) and Harun Ar Rashid Harun (East Bakalia), reserved ward councillor Shahin Akhtar Ruzi.

According to the case statement, on August 4 past year, the plaintiff along with friends gathered near the Notun Bridge Mir Petrol Pump in Bakalia area to participate in the quota reform student protest.

At one stage, the accused individuals allegedly launched a violent attack on the protesting students, firing shots and exploding crude bombs.

Chhatra League leader Rizan, at one point, allegedly struck the plaintiff’s head with a machete, causing severe injuries, the case said.

A CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver reportedly took him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where he underwent treatment from August 6 to August 8, the case said.

Bakalia police station officer-in-charge Ikhtiar Uddin said, ‘Following the court’s directive, we have registered a case concerning the attack, assault, and attempted murder during the quota reform student protest, and a total of 127 individuals have been named in the case.’
