Over two dozen people, including Khan Jahan Ali police officer-in-charge, were injured on Tuesday in a clash between Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Students Against Discrimination at the Khulna University of Engineering and Technology over banning student politics.
The clash broke out on the university campus in Khulna city sometime after 2:00pm and continued for more than five hours to control which police, Bangladesh Army and Border Guard Bangladesh personnel were called in, said witnesses and officials.Â
JCD and Students Against Discrimination, which led the July mass uprising forcing the fall of Sheikh Hasina regime, traded blame over the clash. Â
Khan Jahan Ali police sub-inspector Azhar Ali told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that their officer-in-charge Kabir Hossain sustained injuries in a leg during the clash.
‘We have identified 10–12 others who were injured in the clash. Both groups have their activists among the injured,’ he added.
Witnesses said that over 30 people were injured in the hours-long fight.Â
Students Against Discrimination spokesperson Umama Fatema, however, claimed that she was informed that over 50 students were injured in the incident.
JCD in a statement later in the evening said that Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and banned student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League under the banner of Students Against Discrimination attacked their leaders and activists when they were distributing membership forms to aspiring members.
Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir in a statement said that criminals attacked the students who demanded ban on student politics in front of the vice-chancellor residence.
The statement further added that they came to know from media reports and local people that JCD leaders and activists aided by outsiders attacked students on the campus, leaving 50 people injured.Â
Meanwhile, Students Against Discrimination and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal held separate protest rallies and processions on the Dhaka University campus in the evening, accusing each other of the attack on KUET campus, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in DU reported.
Addressing a rally in front of the Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture, SAD member secretary Arif Sohel urged Chhatra Dal to move away from pre-August 5 politics.
‘We will no longer tolerate politics based on stumps, sticks and rods. Anyone who, like Chhatra League, tries to justify their attacks will face our resistance,’ said Arif.
Afterwards they brought out a protest procession on the campus.
Meanwhile, Chhatra Odhikar Parishad also staged a torch procession on the Dhaka University campus condemning the attacks on KUET students.
