Fisheries and livestock adviser Farida Akhter on Monday said that the government was working to formulate a policy for controlling the production and cultivation of tobacco.

鈥楧ue to tobacco cultivation, many people are suffering in various parts of the country, including Kushtia. Health, environment and even human food are being damaged,鈥 she said.


While speaking as chief guest at an exchange of views with fisheries and livestock farmers at the Kushtia deputy commissioner鈥檚 conference room, Farida also said that farmers in the fisheries and livestock sectors were paying more electricity bills than those in the agriculture sector, said a press release

鈥楢 request has already been made to the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources to overcome this situation. If the Ministry of Finance provides subsidy, the power, energy and mineral resources ministry will take steps to supply power at reduced rates to fisheries and livestock sectors,鈥 she added.

When the farmers proposed to provide low-interest loans in the fisheries and livestock sector, the adviser said that the government had already been requested to establish a fisheries and livestock development bank.

鈥業f the bank is established, the farmers will get low-interest loans like in the agriculture sector,鈥 she added.

Kushtia District Administration and Directorate of Fisheries and Livestock organised the meeting.

Presided over by additional deputy commissioner for revenue Md Abdul Wadud, superintendent of police Md Mizanur Rahman, district fisheries officer Md Abdul Bari, district livestock officer Md Al Mamun Hossain Mondal, among others, were present on the occasion.
