A Shaheed Minar was broken at Gunabati Degree College at Chauddagram in Cumilla early Friday after tributes had been paid to the Language Movement martyrs placing wreaths at the altar of the Shaheed Minar marking Bhasha Shaheed Dibas and International Mother Language Day.
College authorities said that college teachers first placed wreath at one minute past midnight followed by Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders and others and all left the campus at about 12:30am.
Later, a loud sound was heard on the campus at about 2:00am and the guard of the college rushed to the spot and found that two of the three arches of the Shaheed Minar had been broken, college principal Abdul Latif said.
He said that some culprits broke the Shaheed Minar.
Chauddagram police officer-in-charge Hilal Uddin said that after receiving the information, police personnel went to the spot and started an investigation into the matter.
As there is no CCTV camera, it is not possible to confirm who broke the Shaheed Minar right now, he said.
