Bangladesh Catholic Education Board on Sunday urged the education ministry to change the date of an examination under the forthcoming Secondary School Certificate and its equivalent examinations as it was scheduled to be held on Easter Sunday.

Due to the date of the examination on April 20, many Christian students have become worried while heads of the educational institutions under the church and Christian community people have also expressed their dissatisfaction, said a letter issued by the board on the day.

The board has urged the ministry to change the date immediately for easing the concern of the Christian community SSC exam candidates, their parents and other members.

Easter Sunday is one of the biggest festivals observed by the Christian community in the country.

The catholic board is an internal body under the Catholic Church in Bangladesh to coordinate the catholic education under around 1,000 educational institutions across the country from pre-primary to high school levels.

The board on Sunday sent a letter via email to Siddique Zobair, senior secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division under the education ministry.

The letter is signed by the Archbishop and the board chairman Bejoy Nicephorus D’Cruze, OMI and the board executive secretary Jyoti F Gomes.

Earlier the Inter-Education Board Examination Regulatory Committee on February 19 published a revised routine of the SSC and its equivalent exams as per which the date for only one examination — Bangla (compulsory) second paper — has been deferred from April 13 to May 13.

Jyoti F Gomes told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that time to time they urged different governments to declare the Easter as a public holiday as it was an important day for the Christian community for the resurrection of the Jesus Christ.

‘In the revised SSC examinations’ routine the date for the examination on compulsory mathematics paper is April 20 when the Easter Sunday will be observed,’ he said.

The Sunday letter mentioned that under the Catholic board 60 secondary level schools were enlisted while under other Christian communities around 50 more secondary schools are listed across the country.

The SSC and its equivalent examinations are going to start on April 10 and to conclude on May 22.
