
A robbery gang on Saturday night looted valuables from the passengers of a Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation bus and a microbus by blocking the road with logs at Patnitala upazila in Naogaon.
The incident took place at about 11:30pm on the day on Nazipur-Sapahar regional road between Manashi and Karamjhai areas under the upazila, The vehicles were heading to Nitpur from Rajshahi, said the police, adding that the looted valuables included cash, gold jewellery and mobile phones.
BRTC Rajshahi depot in-charge Mohammad Selim told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the driver had to stop the bus as the road was blocked with logs.
‘Over 50 passengers were going to Nitpur from Rajshahi. Robbers looted mobile phones,  jewellery and cash from the passengers,’ said Selim.  Â
Patnitala police officer-in-charge Enayetur Rahman said that a gang 20–25 swooped on the bus, adding that filing of a case in this connection was underway.
‘We are investigating into the incident,’ he said.
The robbers smashed the doors and windows of the bus and the microbus, but did not physically harm any passengers or the drivers, he said.Â
A police patrol team was already in the area, and upon receiving a call from passengers, they rushed to the scene, preventing further damage, the officer said.
‘Upon reaching the spot between Manashi and Karamjhai areas on the Nozipur-Sapahar road at around 11:45pm, we slowed down the bus as the road was blocked with a felled tree,’ ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· Staff correspondent in Rajshahi reported, quoting Ratan Kumar Saha, the supervisor of the affected BRTC bus.
Ratan said that when they slowed down the bus, a large gang of armed masked robbers smashed the door and windows and jumped into the bus and at gunpoint snatched money, mobile phones, gold jewellery and other valuables from the passengers.
He said that the robbers also looted the passengers of a microbus that got stuck behind the bus and also assaulted its driver after which they fled the scene.
Earlier in the small hours of Tuesday, another incident of robbery and sexual assault of female passengers on a running bus traveling from Dhaka to Rajshahi has caused widespread public outrage.
