A 22-year-old was killed in a mob attack suspecting him to be a thief in Tongi area of Gazipur on Tuesday night, said police.
The identity of the youth could not be known yet.
Police said that locals caught the youth on suspicion of a mobile phone lifter in the Station Road area at about 9:00pm and took him to nearby Machhimpur Balur Math.
At one stage of interrogation, the mob beat him badly, leaving him dead on the spot, police said.
Officer-in-charge of Tongi Purba police station Faridul Islam said being informed they recovered the body from the spot and sent it to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College and Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.
An unnatural death case was filed in this regard, he said, adding that they could detain none until Wednesday morning.
