Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy director general Syed Jamil Ahmed on Friday announced his resignation from his post at the BSA.

He made the announcement in a letter to the secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs.

He also handed over his resignation letter to BSA secretary Mohammad Wares Hossain at the closing ceremony of the Munier Choudhury National Theatre Festival at the BSA.

The secretary said that accepting the resignation letter was beyond his jurisdiction.

He said that he, as the secretary of the BSA, had only received the letter.

‘But no official or employee of the academy has accepted it,’ Wares said.

Syed Jamil Ahmed, who took charge as BSA DG on September 10, 2024, addressing the closing ceremony of the theatre festival, cited administrative interference and bureaucratic obstacles as the key reasons behind his decision.

He also claimed that he was unable to work independently and faced frequent delays in securing necessary allocations for the academy’s development.

He further alleged that the lack of cooperation from government officials and employees, and issues related to corruption and syndicates made it difficult for him to fulfil his responsibilities.

He could not be reached for comments Friday evening despite several attempts over the phone.
