
The holiest month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan, will begin in the country today.
The new moon was sighted in the sky of the country on Saturday.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee held at the conference room of Islamic Foundation at Baitul Mukarram on Saturday evening, said a press release.
Religious affairs adviser and National Moon Sighting Committee president AFM Khalid Hossain presided over the meeting.
As per the decision, the Shab-e-Qadr, the night when the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed to Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh), will be observed at the night of March 27.
Chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Saturday greeted the people of the country and all Muslims across the world on the eve of Ramadan.
In a message, he said, ‘On the occasion of Ramadan, I extend my heartfelt greeting to the people of the country and the Muslims across the world.’
Muslims are meant to fast from dawn to dusk during the Ramadan, a time of restraint and austerity.
Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. It is a time when Muslims around the world focus on prayers, fasting, giving charity and religious devotion.
All government, semi-government and private offices have arranged new office schedule during the Ramadan.
