The government鈥檚 requisition of buses for people to attend the launch of the National Citizens Party in Dhaka on Friday has sparked criticism.
Thousands of people from across the country came to Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka to join the political gathering of the NCP formed by the student and youth leaders of the successful July uprising against the Awami League regime.
As a transport requisitioning order issued by the Pirojpur district administration spread on social media Friday night, many alleged that different district administrations requisitioned transports for the political gathering.
The Pirojpur district administration鈥檚 order, issued under Section 3(1) of the Immovable Property Possession Act 1988, directed the police to requisition five buses and hand them over to the Pirojpur representative of the National Citizens Committee, Musabbir Mahmud Sunny, on February 27.
Different quarters criticised the administration鈥檚 role and many on social media questioned the extent of state involvement in the formation of the political party.
The leaders of the National Citizens Party, however, said that they came to know about such an incident occurring only in one district, Pirojpur.
Transparency International Bangladesh on Saturday in a statement expressed concern over the incident of requisition of buses in a district to attend the launching ceremony of the new political party, the National Citizens Party.
TIB said that the interim government cannot avoid responsibility for such abuse of power and immorality at the very beginning of the NCP.
TIB urged the NCP and its leaders and activists at all levels to commit to avoiding such old authoritarian practices under the banner of 鈥楽econd Republic鈥 and 鈥楴ew Political Settlement鈥.
The chief adviser鈥檚 press secretary, Shafiqul Alam, at a press briefing on Saturday said that the members of the Students Against Discrimination and the Jatiya Nagarik Committee in Pirojpur and the family members of the injured and martyred ones in the July uprising requested the DC office for reacquisition of the buses.
Following pressure, the DC office just helped them to get five buses, but the DC office did not pay any costs for the buses, he said.
He claimed that the DC only helped them and there was no role of the interim government in doing so.
NCP joint convener Sarwar Tushar told 抖阴精品 on Saturday that they came to know that the leaders and activists of the Jatiya Nagarik Committee in Pirojpur failed to arrange transport to attend the new party鈥檚 launching ceremony in Dhaka and, that is why, they sought help from the district administration.
Another leader of the newly launched NCP said they were unaware of the transport requisition.
Instead, the party鈥檚 central committee had paid Tk 15,000 as rent for the five buses that came from Pirojpur, he said.
The party leader also said they were considering punitive measures against the local leaders responsible for the misconduct.
