Ex-Gopalganj University VC Nasiruddin, 3 others sued

The Anti-Corruption Commission on Sunday filed three separate cases against former lawmaker from Sirajganj-4 constituency Tanveer Imam, his wife Mahin Imam and their daughter Maniza Ismat Imam on charges of amassing assets beyond their known sources of income.

The anti-graft agency also filed a case against four people, including former Gopalganj Science and Technology University vice-chancellor Khondoker Md Nasiruddin, on charges of appointing officials at the university unlawfully.

The ACC filed the cases against the accused for the graft charges following approval of the commission, said ACC director general Md Aktar Hossain at a press briefing on the day.

According to the case documents, ACC deputy director Mohammad Jaynal Abedin filed a case with its integrated district office in Dhaka-1 against Tanveer on charges of acquiring assets worth Tk 30.62 crore beyond his known sources of income.

The second case was filed by ACC assistant director Shahidur Rahman with the same office against Tanveer and his wife Mahin on charges of amassing illegal wealth amounting to Tk 3.7 crore by Mahin.

ACC deputy assistant director Washkuruni filed a case against Tanveer and his daughter Maniza on charges of amassing wealth worth Tk 1.87 crore by Maniza beyond known sources of income.

Tanveer, a former co-chairman of the Awami League’s election steering committee, is son of late HT Imam, who was political adviser to the ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

In the 11th parliamentary elections, Tanveer was elected as lawmaker from Ullapara in Sirajganj, but he did not get the Awami League’s nomination in the 12th parliamentary polls.

After the ouster of the Awami League regime in a mass uprising on August 5, 2024, the ACC initiated a probe into corruption allegations against former ministers and lawmakers, including Tanveer and his family.

In October 2024, the Dhaka senior special judge court imposed a travel ban on Tanveer and Mahin based on an ACC petition.

Later, on February 19, the court ordered the freezing of 69 bank accounts belonging to the couple and their daughter.

ACC assistant director Bijon Kumar Roy filed a case with its integrated district office in Gopalganj against four people on charges of appointing officials at the Gopalganj Science and Technology University, violating laws.

The accused are former VC and president of section officers and administrative officers’ appointment committee Khondoker Md Nasiruddin, committee member and former principal of Govt Rajendra College in Faridpur Mosharraf Ali, committee member and Khulna University Agrotechnology Discipline department teacher Md Abdul Mannan, and Gopalganj University’s section officer Sharmin Chowdhury.

According to the case document, the accused in collusion with each other appointed 20 officers against 16 vacant posts and the appointment committee also appointed candidates whose names were not on the data sheet.

A recruitment notice was issued on September 20, 2018, for various administrative officer and section officer positions, including 16 vacant posts, it said.

However, instead of filling only the 16 vacant positions, 20 people were hired, including Sharmin Chowdhury, an accused in the case, said the case statement.

The ACC’s inquiry revealed that a data sheet containing the names of 870 applicants was signed by the then VC, Nasiruddin. However, upon reviewing the data sheet, it was found that Sharmin’s name was not listed, despite the recruitment committee’s recommendation for her appointment under the 873rd serial number.

Apart from this, the recruitment committee recommended Sharmin for appointment despite her name being absent from the list, indicating fraudulent practices in the hiring process.

The case also revealed that the recruitment notice specified that applicants should be no older than 32 years of age at the time of the notice but Sharmin Chowdhury, born on June 20, 1985, was 33 years and three months old at the time the notice was published on September 20, 2018.

Despite this, she was unlawfully appointed, violating the age requirement mentioned in the recruitment advertisement.
