The name of Bangabandhu Satellite-1 has been changed to ‘Bangladesh Satellite-1,’ following a directive issued by the Posts and Telecommunications Division.
Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited has been instructed to take necessary steps to implement the change in the directive.
The directive, signed by deputy secretary (admin-1), additional charge of the division, Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, was issued on February 23.
According to the document, the decision was made during an advisory council meeting, where the proposal was discussed and subsequently approved by chief adviser Muhammad Yunus.
With this renaming, the country’s first geostationary communication satellite will now be officially recognised as Bangladesh Satellite-1.
The country’s first ever communication satellite, Bangabandhu-1, was successfully launched into space on the second attempt on May 11, 2018 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.
Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited is the company designated to operate BS-1.
