Battery-run auto-rickshaw drivers blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway for four hours on Tuesday in the Natun Bazar area of Gazipur protesting at the alleged murder of their fellow driver by minibus staff.
Witnesses said that the drivers blocked the highway at around 7:00am on the day disrupting traffic on the highway which caused immense suffering to commuters.
The deceased is Liton Mia, 35, son of Dulal Mia from Shibhasha village under Madan upazila in Netrakona.
Suromin Begum, wife of the victim, said that Liton鈥檚 body was recovered from the roadside in the Masterbari area on Monday night.
She alleged that a Taqwa Transport bus broke his rickshaw鈥檚 mirror, leading to an argument between Liton and the transport workers.
Auto-rickshaw drivers alleged that Liton was taken onto the bus, where he was murdered by severing his tendons.
Sripur police inspector Nayan Kar said that the protesters demanded that a murder case be filed for the auto-rickshaw driver鈥檚 killing.
鈥楢s we showed them the murder case documents, they withdrew their blockade at about 11:00am, allowing traffic to resume,鈥� he said.
Police arrested the minibus driver, Jony, and seized the vehicle, the officer said.
