
Dhaka North City Corporation administrator Mohammad Azaz asked illegal land grabbers to pay rent during an eviction drive in the Beribandh area of Gabtoli in the capital on Wednesday.
鈥業 have spoken with the traders here. They have been given a seven-day ultimatum. Within this period, they must either remove their goods or operate their businesses legally by paying rent to the city corporation,鈥 Azaz told the media during his visit to the eviction area.
He added, 鈥楾he department concerned will determine the rent according to government rules. No illegal business or occupation will be permitted.鈥櫬
The North City Corporation conducted the eviction drive in the Beribandh area at around 11:00am to remove illegal occupations, including brick, sand, and stone warehouses, with around 50 warehouses evicted during the drive, said a DNCC press release.聽聽
The administrator said that various commercial activities were being operated in the Beribandh area without city corporation permission in which the corporation was not earning any revenue.
鈥楾he DNCC owns 150 acres of land on both sides of the road at Beribandh. A large portion of this land has been illegally occupied for a long time. We will evict the occupiers. The eviction drive started today (Wednesday) and will continue in phases,鈥 he added.
Mentioning the scarcity of open fields in the city, Azaz said that the land of the corporation would be freed from occupation and developed into fields and parks.聽
North city corporation zonal executive officer and executive magistrate Mohammad Jalal Uddin and estate officer Farzana Khanom and executive magistrate Md Shahidul Islam led the drive.
