
The election for the 2025-27 tenure of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association is scheduled to take place on May 28, according to the election schedule announced on Saturday.
The members of the apex trade body of the country’s readymade garment sector, the highest expert earners, will elect 35 directors in this biennial election. According to the announced schedule, March 29 is the last date for payment of members’ outstanding dues.
Moreover, the last date for submitting voter nominations has been fixed April 6, and candidates for the post of director can submit their nomination papers till April 24.
The last date for the withdrawal of nomination papers is May 6.
Regarding the election, BGMEA asked its members to contact Mahmudul Hasan, secretary of the Election Board and director of the Export Promotion Bureau, for any information related to the election.
On February 27, BGMEA administrator Md Anwar Hossain sent a letter to the director general of the Directorate of Trade Organisations (DTO) under the Ministry of Commerce, requesting necessary steps to facilitate the upcoming biennial elections.
According to the letter, two boards — the Election Board and the Election Appellate Board — were formed for the elections.
Former additional secretary Mohammad Iqbal has been appointed chairman of the election board, with Supreme Court advocate Syed Afzal Hasan Uddin and former Dhaka Chamber president Ashraf Ahmed as members.
Moreover, Apex Footwear managing director and Bangladesh Leather and Footwear Manufactures and Exporters Association president Syed Nasim Manzur has been made chairman of the Election Appeal Board, with Berger Paints Md Rupali Haque Chowdhury and former additional secretary ANM Kudrut-e-Khuda the members of the board.
Two panels — Sammilita Parishad and Forum — are gearing up to contest the biennial elections of the BGMEA. Chaity Group managing director Md Abul Kalam leads Sammilita Parishad, while Rising Group Md Mahmumd Hasan Khan Babu leads the Forum panel.
Both panels will fight for 26 directorship posts in Dhaka and 9 in Chattogram zones.
On October 20 of 2024, after dissolving the Rafiqul Islam-led board of directors of the BGMEA, the commerce ministry appointed Md Anwar Hossain as its administrator.
