A physically challenged Rohingya man was killed after being caught in the line of fire during a gunfight between two groups of Rohingyas at a camp for the persecuted Myanmar nationals under Ukhiya upazila in Cox’s Bazar district Saturday night.

The victim is Mohammad Rafiq, 33, of the camp.

The police said that Rafiq received a bullet in his chest at about 9:00pm when he went outside his shed and caught in the line of fire during a gunfight between two groups of Rohingyas.

The 8th Armed Police Battalion acting commanding officer, Khandakar Fazle Rabbi, referring to locals said that the victim was physically challenged.

‘We came to know that the gunfight began at about 8:30pm on Saturday as a group of miscreants entered the camp from another camp. At one point, they locked in a clash and began firing targeting each other,’ Fazle Rabbi added.

He said that Rohingya people detained two people on the spot.

‘We will hand over them to Ukhiya police station and the process for filing a case is underway,’ the official added.

Ukhiya police officer-in-charge Md Arif Hossain said that they were yet to receive the detainees.

‘No case was filed so far in this connection,’ he said.

Earlier on March 4, a member of the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation was stabbed to death allegedly by the members of their rival organisation, Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, at Block M in the camp-20 under Ukhiya upazila in Cox’s Bazar.
