Maintenance and repairing of all dilapidated roads across the country will be completed by Ramadan 15 to facilitate around 1.5 crore people to leave Dhaka ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr, said the adviser to the ministry of road transport and bridges and railways Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan on Sunday.

He also said that the authorities concerned also identified 159 traffic congestion prone spots across the country where monitoring would be strengthened.

The speed limit would be increased from 60 kilometres per hour to 80 kilometres per hour on the Padma Bridge to ease the Eid time rush of vehicles, he added.

He said these at a press briefing after chairing an inter-ministerial meeting held at the Bidyut Bhaban in the capital to make the journeys on roads, bridges and railways safe and smooth.

This year Eid-ul-Fitr is likely to be held on April 1.

According to the meeting, some of these roads are – Dhaka Bypass (Madanpur-Bhulta-Bhogra), Nabinagar-Chandra, Dhaka-Joydevpur-Mymensingh, Dhaka-Joydevpur, Dhaka (Bhogra)-Chandra-Elenga, Dhaka-Chattogram and some roads under the two city corporations in Dhaka.

Out of the total 159 traffic congestion prone spots across the country, the highest 54 are located on Dhaka and northern districts routes followed by 49 on Dhaka-Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar route, 42 on Dhaka-Sylhet, eight on Dhaka-Paturia-Aricha and two on Dhaka-Mymensingh routes.

The adviser said that CCTVs would be installed at Gulistan, Phulbaria, Saidabad, Mohakhali, Gabtali and Sadarghat for monitoring the overall situation.

The Dhaka Bypass road would be opened before the Eid, he further said, adding that the number of police would be increased on highways to check looting.

The meeting was also attended by railways ministry secretary Md Fahimul Islam, Road Transport and Highways Division senior secretary Md Ehsanul Hoque and representatives from the departments under the ministries including road transport and bridges, railways and labour and employment.
