The Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Thursday imposed a ban on all types of gatherings, rallies and processions in and around the secretariat and the chief adviser’s official residence Jamuna and surrounding areas.

The ban came two days after the clash between anti-rape protesters and police in front of the InterContinental Hotel during a march towards chief adviser’s official residence Jamuna on Tuesday.

Frequent protests by different organisations and groups blocking roads in front of the National Press Club, Shahbagh, Kakrail and near Jamuna, however, have continued to cause public sufferings since August 2024, when the interim government assumed power.

A public notice issued by DMP commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali on the day said that the decision was made for maintaining public order.

The decision came two days after the police clashed with anti-rape protesters in front of the InterContinental Hotel while they were heading towards Jamuna on Tuesday.

The directive will remain effective from Thursday until further notice.

According to the notice, the prohibition will also be applied to areas including the Hotel InterContinental intersection, Shahbagh intersection, Kakrail intersection, and Minto Road.

Addressing an event in Gazipur, the inspector general of police Baharul Alam urged the people to allow the police to perform their duties without interference and not attack them.

‘No one can block roads in the name of realising any demand. It is unacceptable to create public suffering ahead of Eid by blocking roads. We will take strict action if anyone blocks the roads,’ he said.
