
A man was allegedly beaten at the Rangpur Kotwali police station after he went there to file an extortion and bribery case against a deputy police commissioner of the Rangpur Metropolitan Police on Thursday afternoon.
Police later received an extortion case from the businessman, but the accused police officer鈥檚 name was dropped from the case statement.
The policeman whose name was dropped was RMP deputy police commissioner Mohammad Shibli Kaysar.
According to the police and sources, on November 13 a case was filed against Lipi Khan Vharosha, a businesswoman of Haragach area, on charges of making an attack on the student-led protest during the July-August uprising.
Lipi Khan raised an allegation of bribery and extortion involving Tk聽10 lakh against the police officer.
Lipi Khan filed a complaint along with an audio clip of conversation at the police headquarters against Shibli Kaysar on March 11.
Polash Hasan, manager of Lipi Khan鈥檚 business firm, went to Kotwali police station on Thursday afternoon to file a case in this connection on behalf of Lipi Khan.
Shibli Kaysar went to the police station then and he got angered seeing Polash there and beat him, the sources said.
Polash Hasan could not be reached for his comment in this connection. Lipi Khan, however, said Polash felt unwell as he was beaten severely by the police officer at the police station.
Shibli Kaysar refused to make any comment over the issue.
The officer in charge of Kotwali Police, Ataur Rhaman, denied the allegation of beating.
An extortion case was filed by Polash Hasan with the police station on Thursday evening, accusing Amit Bonik, a director of the Rangpur Metropolitan Chamber.
Amit was detained earlier.
He was later shown arrested and produced before a court and the court ordered sending him to jail.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police commissioner Mohammad Mozid Ali said the matter was under investigation.
