
Several left-leaning students, cultural and labour bodies on Saturday suspended their pre-scheduled mass procession from the Centr al Shaheed Minar protesting against rape and violence against women and resignation of the home adviser.
They, however, held a protest rally at the Central Shaheed Minar.
Chairing the rally, Bangladesh Chhatra Union president Mahid Shahriar Reza said that they suspended the mass procession considering the overall situation.
‘The extremist group tried to foil the anti-rape movement and hatching different conspiracies to divert it to another direction,’ said Mahid, adding that the ousted fascist Awami League government dreamed of coming to power using the movement.
He said that the country’s progressive students and youths would never let them to fulfill their dream.
He also demanded that the government should ensure justice in all cases of violence against women and children.
‘We demand the removal of home adviser for his failure to maintain law and order across Bangladesh,’ said Mahid.
While reading out a written statement, Socialist Students’ Front general secretary Raihan Uddin said that the entire country was saddened over the death of Magura’s rape victim minor girl.
He placed seven point charter of demands, including ensuring justice for all rapes, murder and torture victims, including the Magura victim, home adviser’s resignation for his failure, justice into the killings of July-August uprising, punishment for the mob attackers on masjid, temples and shrines and justice for the attacks on houses of religious and national minorities.
