At least six new incidents of rape and attempt to rape had come to light since Friday following filing of police cases in Bogura, Nilphamari, Natore, Munshiganj, Sylhet and Rajshahi with the victims aged as young as six.

The survivors of the two rape attempts suffered injuries as they tried to escape the rapists.


The new cases emerged amid a rise in such violence against children and women across the country in recent weeks.

The rapes occurred on Friday and March 12, while rape attempts occurred on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

In Bogura, a case was filed early Saturday against a 40-year-old man, Nur Islam, for raping two six-year-old girls by luring them with food in Bogura’s Kahalu upazila.

Kahalu police investigation officer inspector Mahbub Rahman said that a case was filed early Saturday for the rape of two children while playing outside their houses at a housing project in Paikar union, where the accused also lived.

One of the victims came down with a fever while the other started bleeding on Thursday, alerting their families about the incident.

The children were sent to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital on Friday.

A case was filed early Saturday and police were trying to arrest Nur as he went into hiding after the news came to light, police said.

United News of Bangladesh reported that police arrested a man, Abu Bakkaer, for allegedly raping an eight-year-old girl at Nilphamari Sadar on Friday.

The victim was admitted to Nilphamari Sadar Hospital for treatment, police said.

Police said that Abu Bakkaer raped her and asked her not to tell anyone about the incident.

The victim, however, informed her grandmother of the incident as she fell sick that night.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Rajshahi reported that police arrested two people allegedly for raping a 17-year-old physically challenged girl at Baraigram upazila in Natore on Saturday.

The arrested are – Kamrul Islam, 40, and Monir Hossain, 32, said Mahbubur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the Baraigram police station.

The accused called the young woman over the phone luring her to a nearby mango orchard on Friday night and raped her, the OC said, adding that a case was filed on Saturday in this regard.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Munshiganj said that police arrested a 22-year-old youth, Leon Fakir, on Friday night for allegedly injuring a widow by stabbing her after a failed attempt to rape her in Munshiganj’s Srinagar.

Srinagar police officer-in-charge Shakil Ahmed said that the victim filed a case on Friday night stating that Leon came to her house when her two sons went out and tried to rape her.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Sylhet reported that a teenage girl jumped from a moving CNG-run auto-rickshaw at Derai upazila in Sunamganj on Thursday afternoon to save herself from a rape attempt.

She was sent to Sunamganj Sadar Adhunik Hospital in a serious condition, Derai police station officer-in-charge Md Abdur Razzak said, adding that auto-rickshaw driver Emon Khan, 25, and its passenger Mitu Miah, 20 were arrested later that night.

¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Rajshahi reported that police on Friday arrested a man named Habibur Rahman on charge of attempting to rape his daughter-in-law in Mohammadpur village under Tanore upazila on March 12.

Tanore police officer-in-charge Afzal Hossain said that his son filed a case on Friday night.
