Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Sunday said that if the BNP came to power, it would take all necessary steps to prosecute those who were responsible for killings and torture during the and the July-August mass uprising.

He made the remark while addressing virtually an iftar event organised by Amra BNP Paribar at the Lakeshore Hotel in the capital Dhaka.

The event honoured the families of individuals who were subjected to enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings during the Awami League’s regime, as well as the relatives of those killed in the July mass uprising.

Tarique said that if the criminals were not duly prosecuted, the same injustice might be committed again.

‘Whichever party is responsible for running the country in the future, its agenda must include the prosecution of those responsible for murder and torture,’ he said.

Tarique expressed his hope that all pro-democracy parties would unite in the coming days to ensure justice and safeguard democracy.
