Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday urged the interim government to hold elections without delay to ensure stability in the country by transferring power to an elected government.

He made the demand while speaking at an Iftar event organised by the Bangladesh Federal Union  of Journalists and the Dhaka Union of Journalists at the National Press Club in the capital Dhaka.

‘We sincerely urge the head of the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, to implement the necessary reforms promptly and expedite the process towards national elections,’ Fakhrul said.

He said that their past experiences proved that the longer the elections were delayed, the more fascist forces began to rise and challenge pro-Bangladesh forces.

Fakhrul mentioned that extremists and radicals were taking advantage of these delays to advance their agenda.

He said that the sooner the elections were held, the sooner the elected representatives of the people would come to parliament to govern the country. On the other hand, this would also enable everyone to carry out the much-needed reforms together, the BNP leader said.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Mia Golam Parwar, BNP chairperson’s adviser Abdul Hye Sikder, BFUJ acting president Obaidur Rahman Shahin and secretary general Quader Gani Chowdhury, among others, spoke at the programme.
