Islamists and local people allegedly vandalised and set fire to Ismail Shah’s shrine at ward 3 under the Amtali municipality in Barguna during a congregation early Monday.

Confirming the matter, Amtali police officer-in-charge Ariful Islam said that the incident took place at about 12:30am on Monday.

‘Islamists and local people vandalised and set fire to the shrine during a congregation,’ the OC said, adding that there was no specific  allegation against the shrine people.

Barguna deputy commissioner Mohamamd Shafiul Alam said that the police would take action after conducting investigation into the attack.

A video of the incident went viral on social media where local people and some unidentified people wearing Pagris and Punjabis were seen vandalising the shrine and setting it on fire.

Local people, however, said that the Islamists and local people attacked the shrine on allegation of taking drugs and playing loud music during the congregation.

Attacks on shrines and Sufi graves have been taking place since the fall of the authoritarian Sheikh Hasina government.

The police have received reports of 44 incidents of vandalism perpetrated at 40 shrines including mazar, Sufi graves and dargah, in some areas of the country since August 4, 2024.

The incidents include vandalism and attacks on shrines and the devotees, looting of shrine properties, setting fire to the shrines, according to a police report shared by the Chief Adviser Office’s press wing on January 18.
