
Derailment of two wagons of a container train on Wednesday disrupted rail communications between Dhaka and the rest of the country for about one and a half hours.
Almost all trains from and to Dhaka ran behind the schedules, said Bangladesh Railway officials.
No causalities were reported in this incident.
The disruption caused serious suffering to the passengers as trains behind schedules and many were seen stranded at different rail stations.
Anowar Hossain, station master of Dhaka rail station, popularly known as Kamlapur rail station, said that the last two wagons of a container train derailed at about 11:35am on Wednesday when it was entering the station in the capital.
Explaining that the Kamlapur railway station had two lines, one for departure of the trains heading for outside Dhaka and the other for entry of trains from other districts, the station master said that the derailment halted train operation on the both lines.
Train movement resumed at about 1:10pm on one line as the derailed wagon was removed, he said, adding that rail communications were restored on the other line at about 2:00pm.
‘Following the incident, all the trains, stranded at different places, ran almost two hours behind their schedules,’ he said, adding that no one got injured in the incident.
No trains left or entered the capital for about one and a half hours between 11:35am and 1:10pm.
The Kaloni Express on the Dhaka-Sylhet route was scheduled to start from the capital at 3:00pm instead of which it left Dhaka at 7:15pm. It was running over four hours behind its original schedule.
The Silkcity Express on the Dhaka-Rajshahi route was scheduled to start from the capital at 2:45pm instead of which it left Dhaka at 5:40pm. It was running around three hours behind its original schedule.
The Padma Express on the Rajshahi-Dhaka route started from Rajshahi at 4:00pm, which was running around one hour behind its schedule till 7:00pm.
According to Dhaka rail station officials, daily 82 intercity and 48 commuter trains enter and leave Dhaka.
