The police on Wednesday identified three individuals in connection with the viral video footage showing an elderly man being beaten on theft charges in Barguna.

A two-minute and one-second video, which began circulating on Facebook on Tuesday afternoon, shows a man beating an elderly man with a stick in front of a computer shop in the Sadar Road area of the Barguna municipality.

Later, a few others attempted to hold the elderly man’s neck and head, forcing him to sit on the road, while he was heard saying he was tired.

Soon after, two more people joined the first attacker in beating him with sticks until he eventually managed to run away.

After the video went viral, the police identified three individuals—Dalim Matabar, Moin, and Abul Basar from the locality—but none had been arrested until the filing of this report at around 6:00pm on Wednesday.

Condemning the incident, Bangladesh Supreme Court deputy attorney general lawyer Lutfur Rahman in a Facebook post on Wednesday said, ‘Watching the heartbreaking scene, I urge the Barguna district superintendent of police and the officer-in-charge of Barguna Sadar police station to identify and arrest the culprits and take legal action and conduct a proper investigation into the incident.’

‘We should remember that no one has the authority to take the law into their own hands and try any person on the street,’ Lutfur Rahman said, adding that a crime suspect must be handed over to the law.

Regarding the identification of those involved, Barguna Sadar police officer-in-charge Dewan Jaglul Hasan said that three people involved in the incident had been identified from the video.

No one has filed a complaint with the police station regarding the incident yet, he said, adding that the victim, who lives in Betagi upazila, has not been found yet.
