Preparations for welcoming Bengali New Year 1432 began with an art workshop at the fine art faculty of Dhaka University on Thursday.

The workshop aimed at raising funds to celebrate Pahela Baishakh, Bengali New Year’s Day, was inaugurated by renowned artist Abdus Sattar while Jamal Ahmed and Mostafizul Haque were present as special guests at the event.

The faculty dean, Md Azharul Islam Sheikh, also the convener of the workshop, delivered his welcome speech and the member secretary of the workshop, Kaoser Hassan Togor, chaired the inauguration ceremony.

‘The theme and slogan of this year’s Pahela Baishakh will be decided at a university syndicate meeting scheduled to be held on March 23,’ Md Azharul Islam Sheikh said, adding that the participation of the people from all walks of life in the celebrations will remove all fears.

The expenditure for Mangal Shobhajatra is met by selling artworks to be created at the workshop, said Azharul.

‘As a Bengali, it is a matter of pride to celebrate Bengali New Year’s Day, and there is nothing wrong with this, nothing to criticise,’ said Abdus Sattar.

After the opening ceremony, former and current students were seen creating artworks at the workshop.

‘Art lovers can collect artworks at an affordable price and contribute to Pahela Baishakh celebrations until April 13,’ said Kaoser Hassan Togor.Â
