At least one man was killed and two others were seriously injured after a mob beat three suspected muggers at Swarighat in the capital’s Chawk Bazar area early Friday.

The deceased, Md Asif, 20, a resident of Kamrangir Char, was allegedly beaten by the angry mob at about 5:30am on Friday for alleged mugging and he died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital two hours after being admitted to the hospital.

The other two injured are Atik, 18, and Anik, 20.

The mugging incident took place at Jinjira in Keraniganj on Friday, Chawk Bazar police officer-in-charge Md Ashrafuzzaman said, adding that local people chased them as they were fleeing the scene in a boat.

‘One of them was caught by the mob at Keraniganj and the two others jumped into the River Buriganga and they were also caught by the mob in the Chawk Bazar area and were beaten there,’ the OC said, adding that they had first taken the two victims to Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital.

One of the injured was later shifted to the DMCH at about 7:15am for better treatment, where he died about two hours later.

The OC added that no case was filed in this regard so far.

He, however, said that one injured was detained by the South Keraniganj Model Police Station.
