
At least three incidents of rape came to light since Friday in Dhaka and Cumilla with one of the victims aged as young as four.
The rapes took place on Saturday and Friday amid a rise in such violence against children and women across the country in recent weeks.
In Dhaka, local people detained a man and beat him for allegedly raping a four-year-old girl in the Adabar area in the capital Dhaka on Saturday.
Shakil, a resident of the Adabar area, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the incident occurred at about 7:00pm in the Adabar kitchen market area.
‘We have already informed the police of the incident,’ Shakil said, adding that an agitated mob detained the accused.
Local people said that the accused came to the Adabar kitchen market area where the incident occurred.
He found the victim alone in her house and raped her, they added.
Hearing screams of the child, locals came forward and caught the accused, they said.
The identity of the accused could not be known immediately and Adabar police officer-in-charge SM Jakaria could not be reached over the phone as of 9:00pm on Saturday.
United News of Bangladesh reported that a man named Cheru Mia was arrested in Cumilla on Saturday in a case filed for raping his daughter-in-law multiple times over the past four months.
Chauddagram police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Hilal Uddin Ahmed said that the victim’s father filed the case naming Cheru, the victim’s husband Saiful, and her mother-in-law as accused.
The victim was married to Cheru Mia’s son, Saiful, an expatriate working abroad, seven months ago via the mobile phone.
The victim alleged that approximately four months ago, Cheru Mia began forcibly raping her by threatening to kill her.
On March 18, when Saiful, who works in Oman, returned home on vacation, examination revealed that she was seven months pregnant.
Upon questioning, the victim disclosed that she was raped by her father-in-law.
Following this disclosure, Saiful and his mother, Ayesha Begum, allegedly assaulted the victim and attempted to force her to undergo an abortion at a local private clinic.
When she refused, they reportedly locked her inside the house.
Meanwhile, UNB also reported that the police arrested two people in connection with their suspected involvement in the rape of a secondary school certificate examinee in Chandina of Cumilla on Friday.
The arrested are Md Shoyeb, and Ratan Chandra Sarkar, residents of the upazila.
The victim filed a case against two identified and four unidentified people on Friday with the Chandina police station, said Jabed-ul-Islam, officer-in-charge of the police station.
Police were trying to arrest the others involved in the rape, said the OC.
