The president has directed the Supreme Judicial Council to initiate a full probe into the allegations of misconduct against Justice Md Akhtaruzzaman.
‘Based on information previously submitted by the Supreme Judicial Council regarding Justice Md Akhtaruzzaman, the president, under Article 96(5)(B) of the Constitution, has ordered the council to conduct a comprehensive probe,’ said a Supreme Court administration notice posted on its website on Sunday.
Justice Akhtaruzzaman is among 12 High Court judges temporarily barred from judicial duties by the chief justice since October 21, 2024.
The 12 High Court judges were barred from judicial duties amid student-led protests over their alleged judicial bias.
Of the remaining 11 judges, five are now under SJC review and six other judges have resigned, retired, or been removed through the SJC process.
The five judges now under SJC review are Justice Naima Haider, Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif, Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar, Justice SM Maniruzzaman and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman.
Of the six other judges, Justice Khizir Hayat was removed, Justice Shahed Nuruddin resigned and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan and Justice Justice Ashish Ranjan Das retired while under SJC inquiry. Justice SM Maud Hossain Dolan and Justice Md Aminul Islam were not retained by the interim government.
