
A consignment of 11,500 tonnes of non-basmati聽or parboiled rice has arrived at the Chattogram port under package-2 from India聽to meet the country鈥檚 domestic demand.
The consignment carried on a ship (MV DDS Marina) reached the Chattogram聽port, said a food ministry release on Monday.
The physical test of the imported rice after collecting the sample has聽already been completed, it said.
The loading and unloading of the rice will start soon and necessary steps聽have already been taken in this regard, the release added.
The proposal on rice import was approved by the committee on government聽purchase on January 7 and a private Indian company will supply it to聽Bangladesh as the lowest bidder, according to the ministry sources.
The government inked a contract with India to import a total of 4,50,000聽tonnes of parboiled rice under nine packages.
Of the deal, at least 2,85,769 tonnes of non-basmati parboiled have already聽landed into the country and the rest would come in phases.聽
The committee approved the policy proposal to import 4.50 lakh tonnes of rice聽from international markets for 2024-25 financial year for national emergency needs and聽public interest.
