Metro rail services on Monday were suspended for half an hour on the Uttara-Motijheel route as a train faced glitches in its braking system, causing suffering to commuters.

Crowds of passengers, particularly those going home after office to have iftar in the evening, were seen waiting at different stations as arrival of the trains delayed.

Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited is the implementing agency of the 20.1- kilometre-long Mass Rapid Transit Line 6 project, popularly known as metro rail, the first ever elevated, fully air-conditioned and electricity-run rail system in the country.

Project director Md Zakaria told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Monday that the entire service remained closed between about 3:30pm and 4:00pm on the day.

‘We suspended the service after we had detected problem in the braking system of a train,’ he said.

The train with the glitch was docked at the Agargaon station after which the services resumed.

Commuters took to Facebook to write about their suffering due to the disrupted train schedule.

Earlier on January 25, the operation of the metro rail service on the entire route was suspended twice and on the Uttara-Pallabi section for once due to technical glitches in the signalling system and excessive pressure of passengers.

Metro rail services faced frequent disruptions in 2024 too.

In the latest incident in 2024, 18 the service was partially suspended on September after a bearing pad fell off the superstructure.

Earlier in the year, technical glitches disrupted the services on July 7, May 25, March 19, February 17 and February 4.

The service was disrupted also on May 27 for Cyclone Remal, on March 31 for a thunderstorm and falling of plastic litter on the overhead catenary, and on February 14 for a stray kite falling on the power cable.

In 2023, the metro rail services remained suspended three times on August 7, 9 and 21 mainly due to technical glitches and operational reasons.

The metro rail service was opened to the public first on the Uttara-Agargaon section on December 28, 2022. It was then extended till Motijheel and the section was opened to the public on November 4, 2023.
