Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Monday alleged that a conspiracy was underway to undermine the army, a vital institution safeguarding the country’s independence and sovereignty.

Speaking at an Iftar programme organised by the BNP media cell in honour of journalists at the Ladies Club in Dhaka city, Tarique claimed that a conspiracy was at play, stating that ‘someone, somewhere is trying to do something.’

‘For some time now, attempts have been made to bring the BNP face to face with people over reforms and elections. Now, similar attempts are being made to bring the army face to face with people,’ he alleged.

Tarique urged everyone to remain united against any form of conspiracy against democracy, saying that unity would enable them to confront all such conspiracies.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also alleged that a new  conspiracy was being cleverly orchestrated to destabilise Bangladesh once again.

‘An attempt is being made to denigrate the army, the most important institution for protecting the country’s independence and sovereignty,’ he claimed.

‘The only purpose is to endanger the country’s independence and sovereignty, just as it was done during the fascist era,’ Fakhrul said.

BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas, the party’s media wing convener Maudud Hossain Alamgir Pavel and member secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee spoke at the event.
