Extortionists allegedly shot at the office of a real estate businessman at Sher Shah Suri Road at the capital’s Mohammadpur on Monday evening, demanding Tk 50 lakh.
According to the police and victim, three men invaded the office of Chandrima Real Estate Private Limited at about 7:30pm and fled the scene after shooting at the personal office room of its director Monir Ahmed on the ground floor. The building is owned by Monir Ahmed who has his residence upstairs.Â
Victim Monir Ahmed told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Tuesday that he had received a phone call from an unknown number on March 22 when the caller told him that they were associates of listed criminal Sanzidul Islam Emon and demanded Tk 50 lakh from him as Eid Salami.
‘I didn’t respond to their phone calls later on that angered them and they shot at my office,’ said Monir, adding that he did not receive any phone calls from Emon.
The realtor said that he had been doing business for the past 25 years but never had received calls demanding such an enormous amount of money.
Mohammadpur police officer-in-charge Ali Iftekhar Hasan said that they were investigating the incident.
‘Three people came to his office and shot one round. No case has been filed so far in this connection,’ the OC added.
He said that the police were yet to be confirmed whether Emon’s group was involved in the incident.
Some police officials, however, said they had reasons to believe that attack was carried out by the followers of Sanzidul Islam Emon Emon.
According to the jail authorities, Emon, who was jailed on December 8, 2015, was released from the Dhaka Central Jail at Keraniganj on August 15, 2024.
Emon’s name appeared in the city’s crime scene again when a leader of a shop owners’ association was injured in an attack early this year.
The police said that on January 10, Ehteshamul Haque, joint general secretary of the shop owners’ association of ECS Computer City at Multiplan Centre, was hacked indiscriminately by 8–10 miscreants in front of the market on Elephant Road.
A video clip of the incident went viral on social media.
In the incident the association’s senior joint general secretary Md Wahidul Islam Dipu filed a case with the New Market police on January 11, accusing Sanzidul Islam Emon and his associates of the attack.
