A leader of the Awami League died at Chattogram Medical College Hospital Wednesday morning, hours after he was hacked by a group of unidentified assailants at his shop in Mirerkhil Bazar under Rangunia upazila in Chattogram Tuesday evening.
The deceased, Nurul Islam Talukder, 70, of Mirrekhil village, is a former president of the Ward-1 unit of Rangunia Awami League, said ATM Shifatul Mazdar, officer-in-charge of South Rangunia Police Station.
Local union parishad chairman Sheikh Farid Uddin Chowdhury said that Nurul was at his shop in Mirerkhil Bazar at about 6:00 pm on Tuesday when a group of attackers suddenly hacked him, leaving him seriously injured.
Locals rushed him to the Upazila Health Complex from where he was shifted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where he died around 9:30am on Wednesday.
Police responded upon receiving information about the attack and have launched a drive to arrest those responsible, OC Shifatul said.
