Many people left Dhaka on Wednesday, the second day after Eid-ul-Fitr, through roads, waterways and railways due to an extended vacation.
Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the biggest religious festivals for Muslims, was celebrated in the country on Monday with due solemnity, fervour, and joy.
On Wednesday, many were also seen returning to the capital Dhaka after celebrating Eid in their ancestral homes and tourist spots in different districts across the country.
Throughout the day there was no traffic congestion in the city while a very few number of vehicles were seen running on the roads.
Movement of people on roads was also low and a few number of shops were opened.
Marking Eid-ul-Fitr, the government had announced a five-day holiday from March 29 to April 2.
The government announced today (April 3) as a general holiday, which is followed by two weekly holidays — April 4 and 5.
Due to the extended vacation, the holidaymakers during this Eid experienced almost hassle-free journeys without severe traffic congestion on highways.
Additional prices of bus and launch tickets, illegal parking, kitchen market volatility and the movement of three-wheelers on highways, however, caused public sufferings.
Since Wednesday morning many passengers had left Dhaka by trains at the Dhaka rail station situated in Kamalapur area.
As they were boarding trains, many other holidaymakers were seen returning to the capital.
The station master, Anowar Hossain, said that on Wednesday the number of passengers leaving Dhaka was higher than the passengers returning to the city.
‘Due to the extended vacation, many are leaving Dhaka now as the crowd is small,’ he added.
At the Gabtoli inter-district bus terminal, throughout the day passengers were seen leaving and entering Dhaka.
Md Ramzan, staff of Shymoli Paribahan at Gabtoli counter, said that due to the extended vacation, many people were now going to spend the rest of the holidays outside Dhaka after Eid.
‘Rush of the Dhaka-bound passengers will increase from Friday as offices will reopen next week,’ he added.
At the Sadarghat launch terminal, many passengers were seen boarding launches on Wednesday morning to leave Dhaka.
