Rail communications between Dhaka and Mymensingh halted for about two hours after a fire broke out in a commuter train in the Sripur area in Gazipur on Thursday morning.
No causalities were reported in the incident, said railway police.
Officials of Bangladesh Railway said that a committee was formed to probe the incident.
Many passengers suffered as trains on the Dhaka-Mymensingh route were late by two hours.
Dhaka railway police officer-in-charge Jainal Abedin told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the incident took place at about 11:00am when the Mohua commuter train was entering the Satkhamair railway station.
The train was going to Mymensingh from Dhaka.
Suddenly fire was detected in the train’s power car and the train was stopped immediately.
In rail transport, a power car usually propels, and commonly also controls, a passenger train or a vehicle equipped with machinery for supplying heat or electrical power to other parts of a train.
Sripur fire station in-charge warehouse inspector Belal Ahmed said that after the fire was detected two units of the fire service put out the fire within half an hour.
The power car was damaged partially, he said.
‘Primarily it is believed that the fire might have broke out following over heating of the generator,’ Belal said, adding that the real reason will be found through investigation.
Jainal Abedin also said that soon after the fire rail communications on Dhaka-Mymensingh route was snapped.
No casualties were reported in the incident, he mentioned.
Asked about whether this incident was as an act of sabotage, the police officer said that he would not make any comment on this.
Bangladesh Railway’s Dhaka divisional railway manager Mohiuddin Arif said that rail communications on the Dhaka-Mymensingh route had been resumed after around two hours.
Journeys of no trains were cancelled, he mentioned.
He also said that a four-member committee was formed to probe the incident and the committee was asked to submit its report as soon as possible.Â
After being stranded at different stations, many passengers suffered for two hours for delay in their journeys.
