The Anti-Corruption Commission of Bangladesh and the National Anti-Corruption Commission of Thailand on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding aiming at fostering international cooperation in the fight against corruption.

ACC chairman Mohammad Abdul Momen and NACC president Suchart Trakulkasemsuk signed the MoU on behalf of the respective organisations, according to a media statement issued by Bangladesh Interim government chief adviser’s press wing.

Chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and Thailand prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra witnessed the signing of the MoU on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok, Thailand.

Hoping the MoU would help strengthen the two countries’ fight against corruption, ACC chairman Abdul Momen said, ‘Many of the Bangladeshi corruption suspects have taken shelter in some of the neighbouring countries. We believe this MoU will help in tracking them down and bringing them to book,’ he said.

The MoU was signed to enhance international cooperation as specifically referred to in Article 48 of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, which encourages bilateral and multilateral agreements between states to boost direct cooperation between their law enforcement agencies.

According to the MoU, Bangladesh and Thailand will share relevant information, findings of studies and best practices, undertake joint projects, and cooperate each other regarding other relevant work to prevent and combat corruption.
