Bangladesh Railway’s director general Md Afzal Hossain on Friday said that they were considering three reasons, including sabotage, behind the fire incident on a commuter train.

‘The possibility of sabotage cannot be ignored entirely,’ he said, adding, ‘We are considering this as a possible reason behind the incident.’

He also said that they were mainly considering overheat of the locomotive and negligence on the part of any person while smoking for the main two possible reasons behind the incident.

Rail communications between Dhaka and Mymensingh halted for about two hours after a fire broke out in a commuter train in the Sripur area in Gazipur on Thursday morning.

No causalities were reported in the incident and a committee was formed on Thursday to probe the incident.

The director general visited the Dhaka railway station at Kamalapur on Friday to see the damaged power car which was kept at the station’s wash pit.

The DG said that before the inquiry committee’s report it was very difficult to determine how the fire had broken out.

They are considering two main reasons for the incident, Afzal Hossain added.

‘Due to current summer season following overheat of the engine the fire could break out,’ he said, adding that another reason is some people stand beside the power car for smoking which could cause the fire.

Similar incident earlier took place once or twice, Afzal Hossain mentioned.

He said that the inquiry committee was likely to submit its report on the incident on Sunday.

The extent of damage is severe, he said, adding that the damaged power car will be sent to the workshop at Chattogram for repairing.
