A Dhaka court on Friday sent three youths, accused in a case filed over an attack and sexual assault of a female journalist in the city’s Banashree on Wednesday, to jail.
The accused are Soaib Rahman Zisan, 25, who is from Bagerhat and a resident of Banasree at Rampura, Md Raisul Islam, 21, and Md Kawsar Hossain, 21, both from Barishal.
Dhaka Metropolitan magistrate Md Sefatullah gave the order as the police produced them before the court on Friday.
Confirming the matter, Rampura police sub-inspector, who is also the investigation officer of the case, Shahin Mia said that they did not ask for remand of the accused.Â
‘For now, we did not ask for remand. We will appeal for remand later if needed for the investigation,’ he said.
Rafia Tamanna, an editorial assistant at daily ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·, filed the case early Thursday.
The journalist also filed a general diary with the Rampura police on Friday, stating that friends and relatives of the accused launched a spear campaign spreading false and misleading information and hatred against her on various Facebook groups, including ‘Banashreebasi’, Priyo Banashree’ and ‘Rampura Banashree Aftabnagar’.
‘They posted my pictures with harassing captions, attempting to dehumanise me. This appears to me that these activities are to justify attacking me again in the future,’ she said in the general diary.
They were making toxic comments on her clothes and lifestyle, Rafia said in the GD, adding that she felt deeply unsafe in the circumstances.
On Wednesday, Rafia, her younger brother and a friend came under attack when they tried to resist stalkers near her home at Banasree.
According to her case statement, Rafia, her brother and a friend went to a nearby juice bar where an unidentified man kept staring at Rafia.
Rafia then asked the man if he knew her and wanted to say something. The man started shouting at them at which Rafia and her companions left the shop.
Later, the three accused surrounded the victim and asked her what was wrong if someone stared at her, and started beating the victim’s younger brother as he tried to resist them.
The stalkers then started beating her friend who tried to record the attack on his mobile phone.
‘When I tried to save my brother, the group attacked me, kicked and beat me. One of them pulled me by my hair and sexually assaulted me,’ Rafia said in her case statement.
