
Two friends riding a motorcycle were killed in a head-on collision with a private car on the Kalshi Flyover at Mirpur in the capital on Friday night.
One of the deceased fell off the flyover on the road below in the resulting impact of the collision, said police officers.
The police arrested the car driver who was sent to jail after being produced in court on Saturday.Â
They also seized the Toyota C-HR 2016 model car involved in the crash.
The deceased are Md Tofazzel, 16, from Kishoreganj and a resident of Matikata area in Dhaka, and Md Riad Hossain, 18, from Chandpur.
The arrested is Aftab Hossain Raz, 26, son of MA Sayed Babul and a resident of Banasree in Dhaka.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police assistant commissioner for Mirpur traffic division Tania Sultana said that the accident occurred at about 10:00pm.
‘One out of the two on the motorcycle fell off the flyover in the impact of the collision,’ she said.
The accident left the motorcycle severely mangled and the front side of the car was also heavily damaged.
Pallabi police officer-in-charge Md Nazrul Islam said that the injured were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the two were declared dead at about 11:30pm on Friday.
The bodies were kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy, he said.
At DMCH family members identified the bodies.
Riad’s paternal uncle Abdullah said that Riad was studying in a college in Chandpur.
He was holidaying at his friend Tofazzel’s house in Dhaka during Eid holiday and met with the fatal accident on Friday night while hanging out in the city on motorcycle, Abdullah added.
Tofazzel’s brother Nayem said that his brother was a Class IX student of Manikdi ELF Child School at the cantonment.
On Saturday, Pallabi police sub-inspector Atiqur Rahman said that they produced Aftab before court that sent him to jail.
An unnatural death case was filed, he said.
The sub-inspector also said that Aftab had driving licence and the car he was driving was his father’s.
