
Three suspected smugglers along with smuggled goods from India and China were arrested in Sylhet on Friday night.
The arrested are Md Lokman, 48, son of late Abdul Jalil of Sundargaon village at Gowainghat upazila in Sylhet, Ashraful Islam, 19, son of Ali Ahmed of Angarjur village of the same Gowainghat upazila, and Sanju Dey, 54, son of Sudip Dey of Baroghar village under the sadar upazila in Sunamganj, police said.
Additional deputy commissioner of the Sylhet Metropolitan Police, Mohammad Saiful Islam, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that Jalalabad police conducted a drive in the Umairgaon area under Hatkhola union of the sadar upazila at around 11:00pm on Friday and stopped a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in the area.
He said that the police arrested the three passengers of the auto-rickshaw, including its driver, after recovering the China and India made goods, including pasteurised butter, chocolates, shaving blades and processed fruit powder (Tang) worth around Tk 3,08,280 from the auto-rickshaw.
The SMP officer said that the arrested were produced before a metropolitan magistrate court on Saturday noon after filing a case with the Jalalabad police station in this regard.
‘The accused were sent to jail following the court directive,’ he added.
