
At least 132 people were killed and 208 injured in 110 road crashes across the country during the Eid-ul-Fitr vacation, according to data published by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority.
The statistics, covering the period from March 28 to April 4, were released on the BRTA’s official website. Data for April 5 is yet to be published.
Eid-ul-Fitr was observed on March 31, and the government declared a holiday from March 29 to April 2, followed by April 3 as an additional public holiday. March 28 was a weekend, leading into a long break including Friday and Saturday.
According to the BRTA, the highest number of casualties occurred on Eid day, March 31, when 24 people lost their lives and 33 were injured in 18 road accidents.
Daily breakdown of fatalities and injuries is – 12 killed, 51 injured in 12 accidents on March 28; 13 killed, 15 injured in 12 accidents on March 29; 16 killed, 19 injured in 12 accidents on March 30; 19 killed, 30 injured in 17 accidents on April 1; 22 killed, 18 injured in 12 accidents on April 2; 12 killed, 22 injured in 11 accidents on April 3 and 14 killed, 20 injured in 16 accidents on April 4.
Among BRTA divisional offices, Dhaka recorded the highest number of deaths with 32 fatalities, followed by Chattogram with 31, Khulna with 23, Rajshahi with 14, Rangpur with 11, Mymensingh with 10, Barishal with six, and Sylhet with five.
The BRTA compiles its daily accident reports based on data submitted by its divisional offices, with each report covering a 24-hour period.
