The police on Sunday filed a case against 1,086 people and arrested seven over Awami League factional clash at Durbadanga of the upazila in Shariatpur on Saturday morning.

Sub-inspector Sanjay Kumar filed the case with the Janjira police station, naming 86 and 800–1,000 were made unnamed accused in the case, said Naria circle additional superintendent of police Ashik Mahmud.

‘Seven people have already been arrested. Efforts are underway to arrest the rest,’ added Ashik.

Joint forces in a drive arrested Kuddus in Dhaka on Saturday night while Saddam Hossain, 35, Shah Alam, 42, Shah Jahan, 44, Matiur Rahman, 47, Sheikh Abdul Malek, 55, and Shahbuddin Sheikh, 23, were arrested at Janjira, said the police, adding that a Shariatpur court on Sunday sent them to jail.

The clash left at least 20 injured as followers of the local AL leaders – Bilashpur union chairman Kuddus Bepari and AL’s voluntary wing Swechchhasebak League leader Jalil Matbor – locked in the clash over establishing supremacy in the area. Both groups exploded more than 100 crude bombs, according to the police and the people of the area.

The police recovered some bomb-making equipment during the drive, said the police, adding that the operation would continue until the situation of the area became normal.

The people of the area alleged that followers of Jalil had threatened them for providing information to journalists although most of the men in the area went into hiding after the case was filed.

Janjira police station officer-in-charge Mohammad Dulal Akanda said that additional police were deployed in the area and the situation was calm on Sunday.

On Saturday, a 15-second video of the clash went viral on social media showing both groups were fighting in an open field. The video also showed that they were throwing crude bombs from buckets wearing helmets.
