Bangladesh all-rounder Nasir Hossain criticised the previous national selector’s panel on his return to competitive cricket on Monday after completion of his two-year ban for breaching the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code.
Nasir took one wicket and scored only nine runs in Rupganj Tigers' eight-wicket win over Gazi Group Cricketers in the ongoing Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.Ìý
The 33-year-old was banned from all forms of cricket in September 2023, with six months suspended, for breaching the ICC's Anti-Corruption Code as he accepted three charges of breaching the Emirates Cricket Board’s Anti-Corruption Code.
Nasir was charged by the ICC (in its capacity as the Designated Anti-Corruption Official under the ECB Code) after failing to disclose a gift he received while playing in the Abu Dhabi T10 League in 2021.
On Monday, BCB said in a press release that Nasir was cleared to play by the ICC, as he fulfilled all requirements, including the mandatory Anti-Corruption Education session.Ìý
Nasir, who represented Bangladesh in 115 international matches across all formats between 2011 and 2018, later criticised the previous national selector panel, which was led by Minhajul Abedin, for not ‘liking’ him.Ìý
‘Everyone who plays cricket dreams of representing their country. I still believe I have a chance. But performance must be valued,’ Nasir told the reporters after the match.Ìý
‘If you see, when I played well in a BPL season, I wasn’t called even in the A team, the Tigers, or in any practice match. If you are not called to these places after performing, then how will you be able to play in the national team?’ questioned Nasir.Ìý
The all-rounder also questioned the structure of Bangladesh’s national selectors panel.Ìý
‘If you look in other countries, the selection panel changes after two years. Let’s say I was a selector. It’s natural I won’t like everybody. But if the panel changes regularly, then maybe some other selector may like that particular player,’ said Nasir.Ìý
‘If you stay in the same position for nine to ten years and don’t like a certain player, that player’s career can be over. I think that’s what happened in my case,’ he added.Ìý
Nasir also dismissed any suggestion of past indiscipline.Ìý‘I’ve always been careful. There were no issues in sports. I didn’t skip training or cheat the game. My personal life is mine. Judge me by what I do on the field.’
