
An activist of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party was killed and 15 others injured in a clash between two factions of the BNP in the Khaserhat area under Raipur upazila in Lakshmipur district on Monday. Â
The deceased is Saij Uddin Dewan, 40, of village Charghasia under the upazila.
He was beaten and hacked during a series of clashes between the supporters of Charbangshi union BNP former vice-president Faruk Kabiraj and Krishak Dal’s Raipur upazila unit member secretary Shahim Gazi, according to locals and BNP leaders.
Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital medical officer Kamlashish Roy said that Saij Uddin was brought dead to the hospital.
Faruk Kabiraj and Shahim Gazi blamed each other for the clashes.
Raipura Upazila BNP senior joint convener Md Saleh Ahmed said that the Charbangshi Union unit committees of the BNP and its associate organisations – Juba Dal, Chattra Dal and Krishak Dal – were dissolved on December 21, 2024.
‘The clash between the followers of Shamim Gazi and Faruk Kabiraj left one dead and several others injured. We also came to know that some houses were vandalised during the clash,’ Saleh added.Â
Raipura police station officer-in-charge Nizam Uddin Bhuiyan said that a 40-year-old man was killed and several others were injured in the clash that broke out over establishing supremacy in the area.
‘We have deployed additional police forces in the area to keep the law and order situation there under control,’ the OC added.
