The low pressure hovering over the southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to trigger rain all over Bangladesh over the four days starting from today, warned the Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Tuesday.

The low pressure is likely to move north-northwestward over west-central Bay of Bengal today, the weather bulletin issued at 6:00pm Tuesday said.

‘A cyclonic storm is an unlikely outcome of the weather system,’ said meteorologist Shahnaj Sultana.

‘But there will be rain, almost all over Bangladesh, more or less,’ the meteorologist said. The India Meteorological Department has predicted that the low pressure is likely to dissipate by tomorrow.

Between half and three-fourths of the divisions of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet are likely to see rain, accompanied by lightning and strong wind, today, the BMD said.

Even more rainfall is expected tomorrow almost all over Bangladesh except Dhaka and Sylhet divisions, the BMD said, bringing the temperature down by up to 2C.

Rainfall would drop on Friday before it would pick up again on Saturday, the BMD said. On Tuesday, a heatwave swept Faridpur, Sirajganj, Feni and Jashore districts with the country’s highest maximum temperature of 36.4C recorded at Baghabari in Sirajganj.

The rainfall is likely to bring momentary relief for the government for it will keep the rising power demand in check.

At 4:00pm on Tuesday, Bangladesh’s maximum power demand was 14,480MW. Load shedding at the hours was recorded to be 343MW despite high production of electricity from expensive oil.

Bangladesh has been struggling for some time now to increase electricity production from gas and coal mainly due to fuel shortage stemming from a persistent dollar crisis.

The power supply from the Adani power plants has also dropped to 762MW.

The load shedding recorded on Tuesday was the highest in recent times with frequent power outage experienced in parts of Dhaka.
