The Natore district police on Wednesday withdrew four police officials, including officer-in-charge Nazmul Haque, from the Lalpur police station over the incident of snatching a leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the youth front of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, from the police station by fellow leaders and activists Tuesday afternoon.

‘The four police personnel were withdrawn from the Lalpur police station and attached to the district police lines,’ said Mohammad Amzad Hussain, superintendent of the Natore district police.

He said that sub-inspector Manik Chowdhury also lodged a case against 38 named and 120 unnamed people Tuesday night for snatching the accused and obstructing police from carrying out their duties.

The police official said that a joint force team had so far arrested four accused, including the JCD leader who was snatched from the police station, in this connection.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Bagatipara police arrested Rubel Uddin, joint general secretary of the Natore district Chhatra Dal, from Lalpur upazila in a case filed in connection with a midnight shooting incident at the residence of Abdus Rashid Chowdhury, former president of the Dayarampur union BNP at Bagatipara upazila, on December 16.

After the Bagatipara police had kept Rubel locked inside the Lalpur police station, over one hundred BNP, Chhatra Dal and Juba Dal leaders and activists stormed into the police station and locked into an altercation with the police officials there, said witnesses and police officials.

At one stage, the leaders and activists snatched Rubel from the police station and then they brought out a jubilant procession at the upazila.

Natore district Chhatra Dal president Kamrul Islam told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they were not sure why police arrested Rubel all of a sudden in a case filed over a midnight shooting on a BNP leader’s house.

‘The central Chhatra Dal committee has formed a high-level team to investigate the incident. If we find that Rubel was involved in the shooting incident, he will have to face trial as per law.  But if we find that Rubel was framed and arrested unjustly, we will take our party actions accordingly,’ he added.
