Leaders of the National Citizen Party and Hefazat-e-Islam on Wednesday shared common demand for the trial of the Bangladesh Awami League as a party for carrying out massacre during the July-August mass uprising in 2024.
During an exchange of views at the NCP office in the capital’s Banglamotor area, Hefazat and the NCP reached a consensus on four points regarding the trial of AL, according to a press release issued by the NCP.
The points are — AL as a party must be tried for committing genocide, AL’s registration with the Election Commission must be canceled and political and organisational activities must be banned until ending the trial, steps taken for AL’s trial must be visible before the next general election and AL must be declared a terrorist organisation.
Delegations led by Hefazat secretary general Sajidur Rahman and NCP convener Nahid Islam participated in the meeting.
The discussions were centred on holding the AL accountable, reforms, and politically motivated cases against opposition parties filed during the AL regime.
The leaders also agreed that false and politically motivated cases filed by AL against Hefazat and other parties during the fascist regime must be withdrawn and resolved quickly, said the press release.
The delegations of the meeting included Hefazat senior joint secretary general Junaid Al Habib, joint secretaries general Mamunul Haque and Azizul Haque Islamabadi, nayebe amir Ahmed Abdul Quader, NCP member secretary Akhtar Hossain, chief organiser (South) Hasnat Abdullah, chief organiser (North) Sarjis Alam and senior joint convener Ariful Islam Adeeb.
