City Bank PLC on Thursday launched the City Bank American Express Platinum Reserve Credit Card, the first-ever metal card in Bangladesh.

The by-invitation-only credit card holders will receive special benefits tailored to their lifestyle, including a Tk 20,000 welcome gift voucher.

In addition, the card-members and two guests will enjoy complimentary and unlimited access to over 1,700 Priority Pass airport lounges worldwide, City Bank officials announced at a launching ceremony held at a hotel in Dhaka.

City Bank chairman Aziz Al Kaiser, speaking at a press conference, said, ‘This platinum metal card is about redefining the purpose of banking in today’s world. It is also a statement that we are ready to move towards a more connected, cashless and financially inclusive Bangladesh.’

Under Aziz’s leadership, City Bank pioneered the issuance of American Express (AMEX) cards in Bangladesh in November 2009.

At the event, the bank’s head of cards Tauhidul Alam, introduced the new product, noting that AMEX metal card-members can utilise the real-time auto-debit feature to make seamless transactions.

Tauhidul also said that card-members will receive complimentary enrolment into the SIXT rent-a-car loyalty programme, with priority service across more than 105 countries.

Additionally, they will benefit from a two-year complimentary membership of Tablet Plus with offering of discounted stays at select international boutique hotels.

The benefits of the cards also include a ‘Buy 1, Get 2’ complimentary buffet offer at Bangladesh’s top five-star hotels.

Anticipating a bright future for AMEX cards, City Bank’s chief executive officer and managing director, Mashrur Arefin, said that the bank’s card-members carried out transactions worth approximately Tk 5,300 crore in 2024.

‘Of this amount, Tk 4,000 crore was transacted through AMEX cards,’ he said.

He added that the bank was currently in discussion with Bangladesh Bank to increase the maximum credit limit for individuals from Tk 10 lakh to Tk 20 lakh for unsecured loans.

City Bank’s additional managing director and chief financial officer Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman and deputy managing director and head of retail Arup Haider also spoke at the event.
